Gus
Santa brought Gus a Fushigi Ball for Christmas. At first, he was disappointed that it wasn’t actually a magic ball that would float along in his hands. But as he was boxing it back up to return to Target the North Pole, he discovered the instructional DVD. Now he’s hooked.
And he’s already very good at it. No surprises there: he’s great with a yo-yo, too.
In a day or so, I’ll share some thoughts about my first 365 Project and my plans for 2011. For now, I just want to say thanks to everyone who followed along and especially to those who offered encouragement throughout the year.
Thank you so much!

Today, for the first time in either of our lives, Gus and I decorated cut-out sugar cookes. (Alton Brown’s recipe is pretty great. The only change I made was to add one teaspoon of vanilla.)
Our favorite designs of the day are Gus’s interpretation of the Breast Cancer Awareness Ribbon.
Great job, Gus!

Gus turned 12 today. My kids would pretty much rather have store-bought cakes than homemade for their birthdays. Gus chose the same cake that we got for Max’s birthday in September: Kowalski’s red velvet cake.
I’m going to bake a homemade red velvet cake for Monday night when my sister Michelle and my mom come over to celebrate. Please keep your fingers crossed that the boys like the homemade cake better. I’m trying to score some points.

Here is Gus between wrestling matches. I just love shooting the backs of the boys’ heads.

Oak tree, pre-spring.
I thought it would be a good idea to shoot my favorite oak tree again before spring arrives … or before the snow comes back, whichever comes first.
And take a look at the detail shot below, you may even be able to detect a hint of green on the bark …
… and the smart-alack kid whom I told to get out of my shot. Dang kid.

At Max’s basketball game, about seven miles from our house, the snow was perfect for snowballs. Gus threw a few, and I think he had a surprise snowball fight planned for when Michelle came over. He tried making a few snowballs when we got home, but it was too dry. (Plus he didn’t want his face showing in the photo.)

You have to admit, Gus was very creative with this one. The color is especially dramatic.
